Wrestling Is Art: November 9, 2013 – Haverhill, MA
I haven’t been to a live show in quite a while so I was really looking forward to this. I’ve attended one other Wrestling Is Art show and it was a lot of fun. Tonight’s performance was no different as I had a really fun time and saw some great wrestling action!
This event was held in the Haverhill High School gymnasium and I would estimate the crowd size to be just over 100 people, maybe 125. It was a really hot crowd though and the acoustics in the building made it sound like there were twice as many people which made the experience even better.
I talked to my old buddy Colt Cabana and bought a Matt Classic mask from him. He went ahead and forged the autograph for me and told me to keep it a secret. I hope Matt Classic doesn’t find out about it! I also got a signed 8×10 and a picture with Bryce Remsburg. As usual, everyone was very nice and it was a laid back atmosphere. No other wrestlers were out before the show which was a bit disappointing.
Los Platanos vs. Los Ice Creams
I’ve seen the Ice Creams live before but this was my first time seeing Los Platanos. They were announced as being from the Kaiju Big Battle promotion which explains a lot! Most of the action was outside the ring before the match with lots of crazy comedy spots. Once they did get in the ring the match was over pretty quickly with Los Platanos getting the win. Not a wrestling classic, but a really fun match that got the crowd going.
Drew Gulak vs. Kobald
Kobald has a new mask since the last time I saw him, there’s no way I can keep up buying them all! Gulak has a slightly different look too. For some reason he looked less intimidating than when I saw him at National Pro Wrestling Day and my previous Wrestling Is Art show. He still kicked ass in the ring though. I don’t remember exactly but I think he made Kobald tap out. I was disappointed that I forgot to bring a roll of toilet paper to throw during Kobald’s ring entrance. This was a good match and I continue to be impressed with Drew Gulak.
Thunderfrog vs. Frank (Francis) O’Rourke
O’Rourke did the usual schtick where he hates being called Francis which of course make the people do it even more. He actually chased Gavin Loudspeaker around the building which was pretty funny. Thunderfrog didn’t have his hammer with him which disappointed me. I asked him about it during intermission and he said it was a long story but he hopes to have it back soon. Thunderfrog went for the frog splash off the top rope but O’Rourke got his knees up setting him up for the win. A decent match but the main attraction here was the fans yelling “Francis” and making O’Rourke mad. It was a lot of fun.
Sidney Bakabella vs. Green Ant
Bakabella did his usual routine on the mic spouting out old school names like Joe Savoldi, Fritz Von Erich and Bronco Lubich which I find hilarious. Bakabella only agreed to wrestle if Green Ant had one hand tied behind his back so referee Bryce Remsburg did just that. Bakabella pulled out a foreign object and hit Green Ant with it then hid it in various spots (in his tights, switching hands while being searched, holding it in his mouth while his back was turned to the ref, etc). This brought back memories of Bobby Heenan and Jerry Lawler who I’ve seen do similar things. But even the foreign object couldn’t save Bakabella as Green Ant come out victorious. Max Smashmaster and AssailANT got involved too but the details are a little hazy. Bakabella laid motionless in the ring as Gavin announced it was time for intermission.
Bakabella stayed in the ring flat on his back, not moving at all for the entire intermission. Kids were making fun of him, taking pictures, etc. It was pretty funny!
During intermission I bought a hand painted mask from Kodama of the Batiri and got a picture with them. It’s a hard plastic mask reminiscent of the old style Halloween masks and pretty darn cool if I do say so myself!
Jervis Cottonbelly vs. Kodama
Cottonbelly was introduced as “the World’s Sweetest Man” as he went around shaking hands with everyone. As he got in the ring he asked about Sidney Bakabella who was still laying there on the mat. Gavin said how he hadn’t even noticed him there since he just kind of blends in with the mat. Cottonbelly tries to drag him out of the way, Bakabella wakes up and runs out with a dazed look on his face while holding up his arms in victory. It was funny but not as big of a payoff as I expected considering he laid in the ring for about 15 minutes! Cottonbelly then led the crowd in singing a song called “Always Look On The Brightside of Life” (Gavin had handed out flyers with the lyrics before the match). What a nice man that Jervis Cottonbelly is! As he went through the crowd singing with random people Kodama attacked! He had been hiding in the bleachers with a hoodie on the whole time! It was a hard fought match but Cottonbelly came out on top!
AssailANT vs. Max Smashmaster
Smashmaster came out and tried to intimidate the crowd (including me, which he did!). This was a hard hitting match with lots of power moves but Smashmaster came out with the win. It was an OK match for what it was.
Tim Donst vs. Colt Cabana
Gavin invited all of us to come up to the ring to pound on the mat as he announced that it was time for the MAIN EVENT OF THE EVENING! He announced Colt’s father in the crowd, not sure if it really was him, but I assume so. Donst came out and said that my Kamala shirt was the coolest thing he’s ever seen. How can I boo a guy who compliments my shirt? Then Colt comes out to a big crowd reaction.
Donst made this match interesting as he kept saying how he just wanted to be Colt’s friend and he didn’t want to have to hurt him. Donst was having a hard time controlling his anger as he grabbed a chair a couple of times but never actually used it. It was a good back and forth match and I actually thought Donst was going to win at one point but Colt came out on top as he made Donst tap out to the Billy Goat’s Curse.
After the main event I bought a mask from Jervis Cottonbelly, talked with Drew Gulak and Bryce for a couple of minutes (I didn’t know that Gulak is the CZW Champion)
