This DVD is not available in stores. However, it was available through Indiegogo. For those of you that don’t know what I’m talking about, a while back Dallas Paige started up a money raising campaign so Jake could get shoulder surgery. There were several different donation levels with varying perks. This was perk that I got for contributing.
Jake Roberts was my favorite wrestler when I first started to watch back in 1986. For me, like most other fans, what drew me to him was the DDT. Cruel but fair. I loved the short arm clothesline and his interviews. I loved it when he DDT’d Ricky Steamboat on the floor! I loved it when he would take out Damien and put it on everybody he beat. He was just about the coolest guy on tv. I’ve had the opportunity to meet him on two occasions and it is certainly a “mark out” moment for me. Why he isn’t in one of the “big two” even just being used backstage is beyond me. Well, maybe they are a little hesitant due to Jake’s personal problems. I have a feeling he’ll be back in the game by the time DDP gets done with him!
Here’s a list of the matches and some of the dates on here along with some personal notes:
The first two are WWF matches from the “Best of Saturday Night’s Main Event”. The Jake-Steamboat feud was looked at here also featuring additional footage.
1.) Jake vs. Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat. This was the SNME match that Steamboat one. Loved this feud!
2.) Jake vs. “Macho Man” Randy Savage. I remember how torn I was while watching this one live. My two favorite bad guys fighting! So good.
These next matches are from Mid-South Wrestling. By the way, I’m looking forward to the WWE DVD on this!
3.) Jake vs. Terry Taylor. (3-8-85). Taylor was the Mid-South TV Champion during this time meaning he wore a medal around his neck! Many people remember the Red Rooster gimmick he had in the WWF. I guess I should’ve said crappy gimmick. I rermember him from Bill Watts’ UWF. Anyway, Jake loses but gets his revenge by DDTing Taylor on a chair causing him to bleed. Loved it.
4.) Jake & The Barbarian (John Nord) vs. The Rock N’ Roll Express(Ricky Morton & Robert Gibson). (4-10-85). Cool seeing these guys in the same match. One great thing that happened was when Ricky Morton got his head caught between the top and middle ropes, the Dirty White Boys came out and pulled down on his legs to make him choke even more! I love old school heels…they really are a lost commodity. “Hacksaw” Jim Duggan also makes an appearance and gets DDT’d for his trouble! Awesome.
5.) Jake & “Dr. Death” Steve Williams vs. The Fantastics(Bobby Fulton & Tommy Rogers). (4-14 -85). Now this reminded me of the UWF! Certainly miss that. I always thought Dr. Death’s boots were some of the coolest in the business! By the way, this and the next couple matches didn’t have any commentary.
6.) Jake vs. Brad Armstrong. (4-16-85). I still can’t believe Brad never hit it big. He could wrestle circles around nearly everybody! Cool match to see…RIP Brad!
7.) Jake (w/Nord) vs. The Snowman. (6-1-85). At this time, Snowman was the TV Champion but what made this match was the fact that in his corner was “Big Cat” Ernie Ladd and his friend Muhammad Ali!! Ali ended up punching both The Barbarian and Jake! Pretty cool.
That’s it! Nothing else! Besides the fact there are only seven matches, another thing bothered me. After the WWF matches on here, you can actually see the index of matches as whoever put this together sorts through them to decide what to put on here! Could be a little more professional considering what I paid for it. Fine, it was for a good cause. They could’ve at least put it in a DVD case with artwork instead of a cd jewel case! Whatever. It’s worth it.
Just for your information, the other matches on the menu that they could’ve included are as follows:
- Jake & The Dynamic Duo (Chris Adams & Gino Hernandez) vs. Bobby Fulton, Kerry & Kevin Von Erich. (10-27-84).
- Jake & Gino Hernandez vs. Mike Von Erich & Billy Jack Haynes. (12-25-84).
- Jake vs. Mike Von Erich. (12-28-84).
- Jake & The Barbarian vs. “Dr. Death” Steve Williams & Ted DiBiase. (2 different matches dated 6-9-85 & 6-24-85).
Overall, I did enjoy this trip down memory lane (at least the WWF matches!) and a chance to see some classic stuff I never got the chance to see before. Also it went for a good cause. Jake did raise enough money for his surgery. Success!!
